EXCLUSIVE! PR SURVEY (PUTTING LOCAL PUBLIC OPINION TO THE TEST) TO KICK OFF YEAR-LONG MISSION TO HELP BRING BACK THE LEICESTER CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL-2007-ALSO SET TO GIVE TOURISM/MULTI-CULTURALISM A NEW MEANING IN LEICS/EDINBURGH-MAY 2006-MAY 2007.
Recent local Leicester press reports/latest visit to Edinburgh where pen-pal of 7 years resides inspire 'Simon Shiekh' to hatch ambitious fund-raiser, and plan "Carnival Fund-Raising Day"-Saturday 5th August, 2006 in Leics.
A revised PR/Media & Fund-Raising Management Agency for Leics/Rutland-the SSCOM GROUP-(Simon Shiekh Communications Group), is now set to embark on a year long mission to help bring back a local multicultural annual festival for August 2007. By undertaking an ambitious PR Survey in Leics/Edinburgh, one of the results it aims to collate is what festival the public from the 2 cities respectively, can name as the one that they are most aware of, multi-culturally. Edinburgh should provide a fore-gone conclusion, but as for Leicester, it remains to be seen. The Group is also on the search for local people to help out on the year long project, and aims to visit every single shop/office along the carnival route of last year to conduct the PR Survey-(which will also be open to everyone else in Leics to participate in) and which should also put public opinion to the ultimate test.
The Leicester Caribbean Carnival which first hit the streets of Leicester in August 1985, needs extra funds to have a chance of hosting it again after being cancelled for August this year. It rose from 3,000 attending in 1985 to 20,000 in 1988. But by the late 90s and ever since, it attracted 100,000 (meaning it became the second biggest carnival of it's type in the UK after Notting Hill in London), which has contributed to costs rising to stage it, particularly by European Health & Safety legislation.
Founder/MD of SSCOM GROUP, 35 year old Ayaz Sheikh, said, “This will be a positive and ambitious project to give "tourism" & "fund-raising" a brand new meaning by linking up with Edinburgh, uniquely, in a way I believe, has never been seen before to help bring back a local annual festival. My pen-pal of 7 years; a jazz musician/pianist teacher is one of the inspirations behind my decision to incorporate Edinburgh. I've pledged to work voluntarily throughout the coming year and have many memories of the Leicester Carnival over the years in being a local person, but am equally stunned to hear that it’s been cancelled for this year due to extra high costs for health & safety etc. "Sugar" and the team have worked hard over the years on such a prestigious event, and fully deserve for it to return. Therefore I hope to use the SSCOM GROUP to it's highest potential-ever! to help bring it back, and also to ensure it remains for them thereafter."
I would like to declare Saturday 5th August this year (in association with the Carnival Organisers), as an official “fund-raising” day across Leics, which would’ve been carnival day itself. Therefore, it’s vital that the day is memorable to all of us here in Leics and I'm now also on a mission to capture the imagination of the people of Leics about this event and raise awareness of the multi-cultural aspect for it. In addition, I am in the process of planning such events involving local people, never seen before and also look forward to working in association with Leicester City Council and so on, to be part of an historic day to come. Anyone who would like to host an event is more than welcome. Having said that, there will be intense competition and selection for the overall project if it is to be successful, and I also hope to reveal more details about this day at a forthcoming Press Conference, which will also officially launch the Fund-Raising Management Agency."

After recent proposals were put to Dennis, he said, “The idea of Ayaz and SSCOM GROUP coming to offer the unique service to us, particularly of the planned Carnival Fund-raising day of Saturday 5th August sounds ideal and should be an interesting and enjoyable day for us all. It should also help to raise the desired funds and could make an overall difference and capture the imagination of the public from the two cities and beyond. In addition, after recent and current meetings with him, (including after his recent meeting with Maggie Shutt-Festivals & Events Officer and Roy Roberts, Policy Officer of the City Council), the project now sounds positive and I now welcome him officially to exclusively attempt this exciting mission."
Ayaz now aims to be a new Independent Fund-Raising Publicist via the group and will be undertaking that PR Survey in both cities, to find out what people’s needs are when it comes to festivals and so on. "There will be something in it for everyone involved in this project", he said.
Ayaz is also looking for anyone in Edinburgh, originally residing from the Leics area, including any current students and vice versa. In addition, he is now hoping to help tourism for the two cities by interesting people in visiting the cities, especially if they never have. “I know some people from Leicester have never been to Edinburgh, and I suppose the same could be said for the people of Edinburgh. Why, I don’t know, but I aim to find out! Also, what inspires/inspired people to emigrate between the two cities, and how do people view multi-culturalism respectively?", he added.
