Simon Shiekh, the brainchild of Ayaz Sheikh, 37, from Leicester, "conceived" him on Thursday 21st February, 1991, on LCR-963-(Loughborough University Campus Radio"), now known as LCR-1350am.

  • Presented "Time Out" between 9.30am-11.30am, sitting in for regular presenters between February 1991 and mid March 1991. He also sat in on the weekday lunchtime shows-(12pm-2pm), and in the last week of the Spring term (on Wednesday 13th March), he featured the show "live" from the student village on a glorious, mild, and sunny spring day, interviewing students and others around.
  • Returning back after Easter in May, he was given his own "Saturday Sports Show" between 2.30pm to 5.30pm, and on Saturday 18th May, featured "live" inserts from the FA Cup Final, from Wembley Stadium and recalls Paul "Gazza" Gascoigne being sent off "notoriously!". A couple of weekday lunchtime slots were presented in between, and this period ended in early July 1991.
  • October 1991-Simon returned to "sit in" on a couple of weekday afternoon shows-(2pm-4pm) and presented his last few shows on Saturday lunchtime and an afternoon show in January 1992. He left the station in February 1992. (Simon returned back in February 2001 to celebrate 10 years of Simon Shiekh originating, and was interviewed by Rob Jones, the Features Editor of the station at the time. Plus the studios were now located in the Student Union Building, as opposed to the "hut" that he's pictured outside it, above).

  • However, it wasn't until October 1994 as a Social Policy Student (Applied Social Sciences dept) that Simon then aged 23, found himself on Radio Ramair-University of Bradford's Campus Radio Station. Presenting an array of programmes such as on the month-long RSL FM 102 across the city of Bradford, on "The Nightride"-2am-7am and on Thursday mornings-9am-10am. When the station continued on 945am after 24th October onwards, he presented "80s Sunday", playing 40 records from 1980-89 between 7pm-10pm. "This was my favourite time of the week to present, as being a natural fan of Radio 1's UK TOP 40 show, 3 hours before, I felt that presenting old TOP chart hits were ideal after most of the UK, and perhaps, those students at Bradford, would listen to the charts beforehand", says Simon. However, a "Christmas Experience show" on Sunday 4th December, between 5pm-8pm occurred (with the help of his former radio friend, Jonathan Davies), where 350 students from eight halls of residence, took part in a battle to win a music CD and other goodies, the winner was brought "live" into the studio by Jon and interviewed "live". What a great end to Christmas and 1994!

January 1995 saw the return of Simon, on Sunday evenings, 7pm-10pm, (from 8th January), with "Top 40 hits" in the first hour, the pick of the hits of a chart from this week in a year between 1984-1991. Between 8pm-10pm, it would be "the best of the 70s, 80s and today"-the latter, current chart hits and from Autumn 1994. "I loved this show, and still have the tapes to this day to listen back on-fab! This period also included a special "24th birthday show for me" between 9am-10.30am on Friday 20th January, playing as many number 1s and/or number 2s from January 1971 to January 1995. "Rednex and Cotton-Eye Joe" was number 1 in the UK on my birthday!!!-fab tune!"

He took a break from the station from 30th January to 26th February, when on the latter date, (on RSL 102FM for a 2nd time), returned on air with the same format for Sunday evenings (as January 1995).

Continuing in March 1995, the station hosted one of the most exciting competitions ever held on student radio, on it's 4 week FM licence on 102FM across the city of Bradford, the "National Pottery", where listeners were challenged to bring to the studio, an item of pottery that was requested. One brought a "green cereal bowl in" on Simon's show, and after being put into a draw later that evening, she was drawn out from that particular show and won an inter-rail ticket across Europe for that summer! Talk about sheer fate or what-and it wasn't even fixed!!!!

But Simon's most notable achievement to date there was in late May 1995 (after returning back on air on 945MW after the Easter break) when he presented a "24-hour radiothon broadcast" to raise funds for the Bradford Burns Unit, set up after the Bradford City FC Fire Disaster of Saturday 11th May, 1985 . The appeal was in association with the local newspaper, the Telegraph & Argus. Simon had the privilege of scooping an exclusive interview/message of support from former England Cricketer, Darren Gough, as well as other famous names from Yorkshire County Cricket Club. A successful show, fellow presenters/students and members of the public contributed to a nostalgic show! Tapes of this are still available to this day! "Absolutely brilliant-best fun ever, and I never fell asleep during it, as anticipated"! Below are some pics from that memorable event....

He returned back, exclusively, for Ramair's radio studio's 25th anniversary on Tuesday 6th May, 2008, to present a one-off show, after almost 13 years!

  • Simon compiled a demo at the Radio School in Berkshire, founded by former Radio 1 DJ, Bruno Brookes, in December 1997-(but pictured below with another former Radio 1 DJ-Neale James; the school's prime lecturer at the time) but a complete change of career loomed 3 months later, as the SSME-(Simon Shiekh Media Entertainments) initiative hosting PR event roadshows in Leics photo phototo be revised to SSCOM GROUP-(Simon Shiekh Communications Group) as of September 1999, was the start of an exciting PR era to come...(More exclusive pics from this era!)
