Local Publicist hails the return of the Leicester Caribbean Carnival for August 2007.
A Leicester Voluntary PR Agency, the SSCOM GROUP, has hailed the news of the return of the Leicester Caribbean Carnival for this coming August, a year after the long-running event was cancelled due to lack of required funds.
Ayaz Sheikh, 36, Founder/MD, who has embarked on an ambitious film documentary project, looking at multi-culturalism, comparing the contrasts and similarities between Leicester and Edinburgh, as well as incorporating the 2006 cancelled event, which began filming on Saturday 5th August, 2006, the day the carnival was due to take place said, "It’s fantastic news to have learned before Christmas last year that the Carnival is to return for August 2007. Over the last 9 months or so, the belief has never been lost, particularly by Dennis “Sugar” Christopher, the head of the Carnival Committee, and equally, by myself who decided to offer help from a voluntary perspective and for coming up with this film idea. The carnival was the single most important multi-cultural event on Leicester's calendar. I think it is important that we celebrate the city's cultural diversity by helping to championing events like this.”
Ayaz hopes the film (that should be released on DVD/VHS come Christmas this year, will help to perceive an event like the Caribbean Carnival positively and multi-culturally, which should help to achieve sustainable funding for the future.
As well as that, the Group has managed to gain the support/participation of selected Edinburgh folk, business leaders, local MPs and organizations, and is looking for the same, Leicswise. The most recent local Leicester MP to participate in the film is Leicester West’s and Health Secretary, Patricia Hewitt, who is delighted that the Carnival is set to make a return. Also, Leicester East MP-Keith Vaz and Harborough MP-Edward Garnier were filmed last November.
SSCOM GROUP looking for further Leics locals/organisations and wannabe film buffs to help film/take part in the film entitled, "Simon Shiekh: An Insider's Guide to PR-Like you've never seen before". Edinburgh was chosen because of the cross-cultural friendship between Ayaz and a local Jazz Pianist/Music Teacher, spanning over the last 7 years. “incorporating a friendship like this is relevant and shows that whoever you are, with willingness to mix, you can learn and form a good and tolerant understanding of each other. I hope the majority of the people of Leics and Edinburgh can help us to show the rest of the UK and perhaps, across the world that this can still happen, “ added Ayaz.
As there was always the possibility that there would be an announcement of the return of the Caribbean Carnival before the 4th August, the film will be supported by the multi-culturalism angle and just what it is like to be living in this kind of society in 2007 and beyond in the two cities.
Marcus Solanki who is advising the SSCOM GROUP said, “This sounds like a fascinating, exciting and unique project never seen in Leics before, let alone in Edinburgh, and looking at multi-culturalism in a positive light is what we need. The comparison between Leics and Edinburgh will be very interesting, and is so far, as I've seen some of the filming. I'm excited to be contributing to this project with Ayaz and the SSCOM GROUP, and look forward to seeing what's to come before the 4th August next year, the return of Leicester Caribbean Carnival Day".
SSCOM GROUP is counting down to the Carnival day and hopes to include an unexpected ending to the film on the day. Also, it’s hoping to host a preview event in the next couple of months in Leics, as well as Edinburgh to showcase what the venture is about. Plus any sponsorship attempt hasn’t been ruled out yet by the group, as originally anticipated.
Anyone interested in joining as a volunteer to help film/take part in the film in Leics, and/or receive further information about the project should either call: 07817 057078 or e-mail: sscoms@hotmail.com
