24-hour Radiothon Fund-Raiser of May 1995 returned back to Campus Radio Ramair for the 25th year Alumni event-Tuesday 6th May, 2008

Former Bradford University Student's past, catches up on radio show!

A former student of the University of Bradford during the academic year of 1994/95, who left after just one year, but who also spun discs on it’s campus radio station, Ramair, made a welcome return after being invited, exclusively for it’s 25th studios anniversary.

Ayaz Sheikh, now 37 on this historic day and from Leicester, joined other faces, past and present for it’s special day of programming entitled, “Ramair Alumni Day”. The former Social Policy Studies student got involved in the T & A’s Extra Time Appeal of May 1995, to contribute in raising funds for the Bradford Burns Research Unit, set up after the Bradford City Football Club Fire Disaster in May 1985. Raising £550 at the time, he produced and presented a “24 hour radiothon” in late May 1995, broadcasting a selection of music and interviews with contributions with fellow Ramair presenters, and interviews with the public, including former England and Yorkshire Cricketer, Darren Gough.

He presented under the name, “Simon Shiekh”, which was derived from another campus radio station at Loughborough University, back in February 1991.

“Despite having to leave the University after not making it into my 2nd year, I was lucky to have made a mark at Ramair during the time, and returning back home to Leicester thereafter, seems to have paid off. I’m now currently celebrating 10 years of running my voluntary PR agency-the SSCOM GROUP-(Simon Shiekh Communications Group) with a race against time to complete filming of a multi-culturalism documentary between Leicester and Edinburgh since August 2006. It was very exciting to return back to Ramair after quitting the station after my radio-thon, and was pleased to broadcast an entertaining show”, he said.

“I thank those currently at Ramair, particularly former Station Manager, Philip (Lickley), who I recently contacted on Facebook about joining this prestigious event. It was also nice to return back to the city of Bradford after 13 years and I was surprised to hear about a few changes...After this event, it’s all systems go for “The Big One!”, added Ayaz.

Station Manager, Andrew McSweeney said, “The Ramair Alumni event was a celebration of 25 years of quality student radio and we were delighted to have Ayaz back to join in the fun. We were all excited to learn from our past presenters as well as pulling some tricks out of the bag to hopefully teach them a thing or two!”
